120/140 mercury stern drive?
Trying to take the upper stern off and it comes out about 12 and far as it will come off. I tookt he engine out and tried to tap the shaft and still will not come off. I have it in foward position. I tried to hammer off and tried using wd40 on it will not come off. Any thing I can do to get the upper stern off. I need to change the uppper bellow is leaking so I have to change it. I ripped out the upper bellow and can access under neath. I sprayed both ends really good with wd40 and still cannot get it on. I tried to pry it off and will not pry off. This is on a trihull boat. 17 foot. I also took of fthe plate for the upper gearing and unable to tap the gear bolt off to take the stern off that way either. Please help
If I hammer it out do I need to do any thing before i hammer like do any thing to the gimball. Or if i hit the shaft by the engine it should just slide out.
My guess is that the Gimble Bearing is frozen to the splined intermediate shaft, and that you have pulled it out, passed where the machined boss would normally stop it.. There is a snap ring that holds it in place, so there are several possibilities..... you should be able to see the universal joints, and should have enough play to remove the two caps that attach the universal to the shaft. That will get the drive out of the way. Now you can see the problems. I've used a torch to cut the bearing away, but had a oil and grease fire to deal with. Once I chained the drive to a big post and used a truck to jerk the boat and trailer away. Needless to say you don't see this a lot . It's not supposed to happen. Once you get it off, remember you have to fix what's left.
