My Filipino friend once told me "The Philippines is poor because we export tomatoes and import tomato paste." In other words, their economy is poor because they export mostly low-profit agricultural products, but they have to import a lot of expensive manufactured goods.
On the other hand, Japan exports lots of high-profit goods such as cars and electronics, and mostly imports low-cost goods such as agricultural products. That's how they got rich.

He transformed Japan into a powerful manufacturing economy with high education standards by the early 1900s. After the war, they were able to rebuild extremely quickly and continue their strong economic development.
