Traditionally, can small cups that come with saucers be used as coffee cups or just tea cups?
I'm not talking about espresso cups, but larger cups - betwen espresso cup size and mug size. Would it be good etiquette to serve coffee in such cups, or are they traditionally just tea cups?
They can be used for both tea and coffee.
However, if you really want to stick to old European traditions then you should have two different sets of these small cups with saucers - one set for tea, the other one for coffee. There is no difference in the volume of fluid that these cups can hold, but traditionally they do have different shapes. Cups for tea are quite wide (resembling a bowl). The cups for coffee on the other hand are tall and narrow to keep the coffee hot.
Having said all this - I think no-one really cares about these super-fine details any more.
