Has anyone made childrens birthday cakes? Could you please advise how to successfully cook a dome shape cake?
I would like to make a ladybird cake but am having trouble with getting the cake to cook very well. In order to get the dome shape for the ladybirds body, the US web sites tell you to use a pyrex bowl. Which is all very well, but they use a 16oz pound cake mix - what is pound cake?. I am assuming this might have something to do with my lack of success! I have found that if I use a basic sponge recipe and turn the temperature down and allow extra time the cake is heavy, very well done on the outside and only just cooked on the inside.

Can anyone please advise how this might be done?
I should have mentioned that I am in the UK, where we haven't even heard of pound cake, let alone be able to buy packet mixes for it!
I've made these quite a few times......pound cake is much denser than a regular cake; and sponge cake is even lighter than a regular cake - that's why it won't hold up. You can buy pound cake mixes in the grocery store, although they cost a little more than a regular cake mix......
OLD SOUTH POUND CAKE
1-1/2 c. butter, softened
1 lb. powdered sugar
6 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
2-1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
Cream butter until light; gradually beat in sugar and mix well. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla. Gradually add flour and salt, folding into cramed mixture by hand. Pour batter into well-buttered bundt pan. Cut through batter with knife, to remove air bubbles. Bake in pre-heated 325 oven for 60 min. Cool in pan on rack before removing...........** Your pyrex bowl is about the same size as the bundt pan, but since it doesn't have the hole in the center, it may need to bake a little longer. Test the center with a cake tester or knife
