The Legend of Bradman's Invincibles?
60 years ago, the Australian team toured England, won the Test series 4-0, and remained unbeaten throughout, winning 23 of their first-class matches, and drawing the other 8. 7 batsmen passed 1,000 runs for the summer, and 47 centuries were scored. They are widely regarded as the finest team ever assembled.
The names of this illustrious band of brothers has resonated down the years: Don Bradman; Lindsay Hassett; Sid Barnes; Bill Brown; Ron Hamence; Neil Harvey; Ian Johnson; Bill Johnston; Ray Lindwall; Sam Loxton; Colin McCool; Keith Miller; Arthur Morris; Doug Ring; Ron Saggers; Don Tallon; Ernie Toshack.
Could any of today's Australian team break into this squad, and who would they replace?
I think Hayden and Ponting could definitely break into the squad, they both have fantastic records and careers. Hussey probably, though it depends on the latter stage of his career. And maybe Warne, if you were to look at players who have only just finished their careers. And I'm sure if you look back to some of the players from Steve Waugh's reign a few might make it.
But I'm not sure they could (or should) replace any of Bradman's team or any player's from that era though to be honest. Some of those players are incomparable to today's players (and that's not to disparage against any of today's players, anyone who knows me knows I love the Aussie team) and Bradman's team had such phenomenal success. But it's a completely different game now to what it was back then. The players are different (physically etc) and so is the style of play, I think any comparison would be unfair.
So I would have players like Hayden and Ponting alongside Bradman's invincible's but not surpassing or replacing them.
