Kasubi tombs, traditionally known as Mpanga-Azaala-Mpanga, a place of worship in the kingdom of Buganda is located on a hill in Kampala, Uganda. The tombs are a burial place for the last four kings of Buganda known traditionally as Kabakas, and are located five kilometers from Kampala city center on the hill Kasubi. Historically, Buganda Kabaka have always built their palaces on strategic hills inorder to find easy ways to escape during invasion and control the main roads to the palace.
The Baganda belong to the people who speak Bantu, one of Uganda's ethnic groups. According to tradition, the first Kabaka of Buganda was Kintu who is said to have come with his wife Nambi. Kabaka Kintu is said not to have died, but have disappeared in a forest Magonga.
The Kasubi tombs are one of the burial grounds / royal tombs of Buganda Kabakas, and site is an example of traditional Ganda Architecture, culture and traditions alive. The palace was built by Kabaka Mutesa 1 in 1882 and according to culture, each king was supposed to be buried in a separate site when he died and a royal shrine to house his jawbone which was believed to contain his spirit would be established at another site. 1 Mutesa was the 35th king Buganda (1856-1884) and the first king to be buried in his former palace (the Tombs) at Kasubi without removing his jaw. Mwanga II who succeeded his father Mutesa in 1884 was the second king to be buried at the Tombs after his remains were reduced from exile (Seychelles Islands) in 1910. His son Daudi Chwa II succeeded him at the age of one year in 1896 and reigned until his death in 1939. He too was buried in the tombs. Daudi Chwa II was succeeded by his son Edward Mutesa II and the governor during the Protectorate Uganda. He died in 1966 in exile (London) and his remains were brought back and buried in mass graves in 1971.
The Kasubi Tombs is a landfill important Kabakas Buganda because old traditions which broke the site when the Kabaka were buried together. Each prince and princess who is a descendant four Kabakas is also buried at Kasubi behind the main temple. The site is a large cemetery of the royalty of the Buganda kingdom.
The graves include Bujjabukula (Gatehouse) a beautifully built gate, which is the entrance to the site. Its built with wooden columns and a wall made of wood Leeds reeds.The is woven in a small courtyard with a circular house-House of Royal drums (Ndoga-obukaba) where drums are stored. In the main courtyard, there are several houses built for the widows of the Kabaka and other ceremonial purposes.
In Kasubi and all other royal tombs, there is a space behind a curtain of canvas-back known as Kibira (forest) which houses the tombs of actual Kabakas are and where certain royal ceremonies are performed as the ceremony of the new moon and consultations of the mediums. Infront of the curtain, there are raised platforms that match the position of each grave Kabakas curtain.Entrance behind the "Secret forest "is limited to anly Kabakas widows of the royal family, Prime Minister of Buganda (katikkiro) and Nalinya (official sister Kabakas).
The Tombs Kasubi are adorned with regalia like spears, drums, medals, photographs and shields Kabakas buried there.The structure is supported by wooden poles wrapped in the background and the ground carpeted with grass and palm leaves. Background traditionally popular for clothing is a fabric made from flexible back of a fig tree (Ficus natalensis) and has a strong ritual importance to the people of Uganda. Thatching of the roof is conducted by members of Ngeye clan (colobus monkey clan) ant the decorators of the poles are the Leopard clan, who are the only persons authorized to do so work.Pregnant women and widows are not allowed to enter the building while its being thatched since this would cause leakage.Similary the Roofers are not supposed to haver sex during the thatched main periods is supported by 52 rings, which represent the 52 clans Ganda culture.
The Baganda cultures can also be experienced in places like prison Katereke where the king's brothers in imperisoned trench.Naggalabi coronation site, where Buddo Kabakas Buganda have been crowned for the past 700 years.Wamala Tomb the secret burial place of Kabaka Suuna II (1836-1856) had 148 women and 218 children. Namasole kanyang graves where the mother of Kabaka Suuna II was buried. Ssezibwa Falls a spiritual place for kings and Baagalayaze Nnamasole the graves where the mother of Kabaka Mwanga II was buried.
The magnificent items Kasubi tombs represent the rich traditions and heritage of the Baganda people. People believe that all deaths of people has a spiritual origin and there interraction between the living and the dead. Crops Baganda are the beautiful tombs, where bodies and minds before their fathers, leaders and traditions are to this day.
