Herbs are fun to grow and easy to use. Herbs can be the best friend of a cook Frugal because they can not even improve the simplest fare making it seem grand! Herbs are easy to grow - you can even grow them in your kitchen window.
The addition of herbs can completely change the taste of food, homemade breads to soups, stews and vegetables. And they can add variety and excitement to your diet.
A beginner should use herbs with care, adding a little at a time and adjust to your tastes. Each plant has its own flavor to the whim of some herbs are also well known associations with particular foods. Basil is often paired with tomatoes, rosemary with
lamb, chives with cream cheese and cottage cheese.
Fresh herbs are great as a garnish. Vinegars herbs can be used in salad dressings, soups and marinades. You can also add fresh herbs to mayonnaise or butter a different flavor.
Fresh herbs will keep in refrigerator for several days. A good way to freeze herbs such as basil, oregano and dill is cut, put in Ice Cube trays, cover with water and freeze. Then just add to stews and sauces as needed.
Some herbs are easy to grow lemon balm, rosemary, oregano, dill, basil, parsley, mint, lavender, sage. Of course, you can buy herbs for cooking at the supermarket, too.
Here are some simple recipes to get you started using herbs in your kitchen.
Lemon chive vinaigrette
1 clove garlic
pinch of salt
Zest of 1 lemon, finely grated
and juice
1 1 / 2 tablespoons Coffee mustard
4 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons chopped chives
Put the garlic and salt in a bowl and crush together. Stir in lemon zest, juice and mustard, stirring until smooth. Slowly pour in oil. Stir in chives and season with black pepper, if desired.
This is a good dressing to pour over hot, cooked apples new potatoes. Add green onions, finely chopped.
Iced tea with mint
Wash: 8 sprigs fresh mint, 12 inches long (any mint, spearmint, peppermint, applemint suffice). Place in blender with 4 cups water and liquefy. Let it set for about 1 / 2 time and strain.
Herbed Butter
1 / 2 cup butter
4 tablespoons fresh herbs or 2 c. tea herbs dried
Soften butter at room temperature. Finely chop the fresh herbs. Blend herbs and butter well. Store in refrigerator.
Use to season vegetables, such as a spread on bread, biscuits or potatoes cooked in the oven. Anywhere you would normally use butter.
Here is something else: not really cooking, but a recipe you may find amusing!
Basil-Lemon Mask
Spray a handful of fresh basil leaves. Peel 1 / 2 a lawyer and puree. Add lawyer basil in a blender with juice of 1 lemon and 1 teaspoon honey spoon, stir until smooth.
Apply to clean face and leave for as long as desired. Rinse warm water.
In short, you do not need to be an expert on the grass to enjoy learning to use herbs.
